This engaging and creative free art therapy course from Durham Learn is designed to help parents support their children’s emotional development and expressions through playful, hands-on activities. Using simple accessible materials, the course introduces techniques that encourage open communication, strengthen the parent-child bond and explore feelings in a safe and supportive environment.

Over the course, families will take part in activities such as:

  •  Making homemade playdough – a sensory experience that promotes relaxation and imaginative play.

  •  Finger painting family portraits – using colours to represent different family members and their roles, helping children express their relationships and emotions.

  •  Creating mood boards – using magazines, books and textured materials to visually explore feelings, interests and personal identity.

No artistic experience is needed – just a willingness to explore, play and connect. This course supports emotional wellbeing, builds creative confidence and equips parents with simple therapeutic tools they can use at home.

For more information about the course on Thursday, 15 January, 2 to 4.30pm at Bullion Hall, email durhamlearn@durham.gov.uk or phone 03000 266115
